Many patients interested in cosmetic surgery naturally want to achieve the best results when choosing a doctor. At this point, some may think it is more appropriate for a surgeon to focus on only one type of surgery. However, this is not always a valid criterion.
After six years of basic education in medical school, we doctors already choose our specialties. As plastic surgeons, we then embark on another six years of residency in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery. It must be acknowledged that this specialty is one of the fields with the broadest scope of practice in the entire medical world.
During their training, a plastic surgeon gains knowledge and experience across a very wide spectrum, from burn surgery to hand surgery, from microsurgery to the correction of congenital anomalies, and from tumor surgery to all cosmetic surgeries. However, it is not quite possible to master such a broad field all at once. For this reason, after their residency, plastic surgeons usually specialize further by focusing on a sub-field such as cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, or microsurgery.
My choice was to focus on cosmetic surgery. However, I do not believe it is necessary to limit oneself to a single type of surgery within this field. A plastic surgeon who works systematically, with discipline, and on a sufficient number of cases can achieve a very high level of expertise in a cosmetic procedure with fewer than a thousand cases.
To date, I have performed nearly ten thousand cosmetic surgeries. The level of mastery I have achieved, not just through numbers but through careful planning, meticulous execution, and rigorously managed follow-up processes, has brought me to a professionally and conscientiously satisfying point. Of course, there is no end to learning and mastery. New techniques, different approaches, details that need to be reconsidered for each patient... All of these are exciting and valuable to me. Through discipline, diligence, perseverance, and a love for the work, it is possible to improve every day.
